Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to correct visual problems caused by sagging, puffiness, excess skin, or fat deposits in the eyelids. Eyelid surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids.

Upper eyelid surgery is usually performed by removing excess skin and fat tissue due to sagging eyelids. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and incisions are usually placed along the natural creases of the eyelids. This allows for less visible and more natural-looking scars.

Lower eyelid surgery is performed to correct deformities caused by bulging of the fat pads or sagging skin in the lower eyelids. During the procedure, incisions are usually made at the base of the eyelashes or on the inner surface of the eyelid facing the eye. Lower eyelid surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia.

The recovery process varies from person to person, but most people can return to normal activities within a few days. Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are normal after the procedure, but these symptoms usually disappear within a week.

What should be considered after eyelid surgery?

After eyelid surgery, the following should be considered:

  • Rest: It is important to rest for a few days after surgery. Taking a few days off work or other strenuous activities before returning to work would be beneficial.
  • Cold application: In the first few days after surgery, swelling and bruising may occur in the treatment area. You can use ice packs or cold compresses to reduce this swelling.
  • Medication use: Use pain relievers, antibiotics, and other medications prescribed by your doctor regularly.
  • Sun protection: Sunlight can irritate your eyelids and delay the healing process. Try to avoid sunlight for the first few weeks after surgery.
  • Glasses use: If you need to use glasses, make sure the frame does not irritate your eyelids. It is recommended to avoid wearing contact lenses for a few weeks after surgery.
  • Avoid exercise: Avoid strenuous exercise for a few weeks after surgery. You can walk or do light exercises, but do not start any exercise program without your doctor's approval.
